This has become the
rallying cry for those concerned about losing the last piece of
vacant property in Carp Village’s core by the fairground. They
face a tight deadline to purchase this land or it
will be turned into a
multi-unit residential area. A
group of concerned citizens,
supported by the Carp Fair Board, the Farmer’s Market and other
community organizations, has launched a number of fundraising
initiatives so this land can be made a public space.

Doug Hamstead from AChannel brings us an objective story on
the Village Green, it's importance, and the efforts to date to
save this important piece of our heritage.

Carp Village, with
its early buildings,
Carp Fair
and Farmers’ Market, represents a
unique piece of our agricultural and rural history. Building a
multi-unit residential development in the core of this village
beside the Carp fairgrounds will change this forever. This can
only be prevented by your generous donations. The Village Green area is in the centre of Carp,
south of the Carp Fairgrounds and behind the church and
graveyard on Carp Road, across from the
Huntley Centennial Public School.
Sawyer Watson, age 13, a student of Huntley Centennial, did a
speech about the Village Green and the impact on the local
school and community at the wine and cheese fundraiser on March
22nd (we will post this soon).
Carp will grow, and as it grows the residents will want larger
park space, and they do not want to face the prospect of having
to put parks or greenspace on the outside of town, where they
would have to drive to get to it, and would separate visitors
from the unique village shops, restaurants and attractions.
Ways to help out
A
“Square Foot” program
encouraging everyone to purchase one or more “Square Feet” at
$10 per sq. ft.
This helps to buy the land one foot at a time and
100% of the
contribution goes towards this goal. All contributions are
eligible for a tax credit from the City of Ottawa, if all or
part of the property is purchased. Each square foot purchased
received a square foot certificate with the donor’s name or the
name they want which will be posted in a public place. Donations
of $100 or more will entitle the donor to placing their name or
the name of a loved one on a memorial placard/sign. Higher
levels of contribution will entitle the donor to a more visible
recognition on the placard/sign as a memory for generations to
come.
A Wine and
Cheese Fundraiser was held on March 22, 2007 at 7 pm. at
the Carp Agricultural Office.
This event provided an opportunity for many members of the
community to learn more about this
initiative, and to interact with Ward 5 Councillor, Eli El-Chantiry
and other invited political dignitaries and to contribute
towards the preservation of Carp’s village core. At the event,
the Carp Agricultural Society
donated to the cause with a
cheque for $10,000.
The Dart Club had a
tournament on June 2. They raised $413.00 for the campaign
and the WCASC kicked in $55.00 for a total of $468.00 for the
day. Thanks to everyone who came out for that event.
That's not the only way to help, we are also
looking for some
volunteers!
If you want to help with canvassing, involving your
organization, posting a sign in your store, or anything to help
out, please call Wendy Deugo at 839- 3308.
Carp has a
decision to make
This means the choice is yours.
Donate just $10 and your name
could go down in history on a Square Foot in the Village Green. Carp can
keep looking the way we love it and know it today - with a lush greenspace in the middle of a charming, historic village...

...or we could start to look a lot more
like some of the surrounding areas
(artist's concept - above right)...
Imagine a hundred or so houses plunked down
where you used to park to go to the Carp Fair (the light green
area next to the fairgrounds below). We don't know anyone
who likes this idea, but if the community doesn't get behind
this initiative that is exactly what will happen. We have
heard that there are people who mistakenly believe that putting
low cost housing in Carp will raise their property value - think
again, folks!

The
West Carleton Heritage Park Association (WCHPA)
is a non-profit organization formed with the goal to create
within the Village of Carp a recreational area that extends the
Carp Fairgrounds, continues to provide parking for the fair,
facilitates expansion of the farmers market and the potential
for a non-profit heritage theme park
using artefacts and heritage buildings from the former West
Carleton Township.
The WCHPA identified the 14-acre parcel of
land, as the preferred location for the heritage village. The
land is adjacent to the Carp Fairgrounds and is strategically
located at the centre of the Village of Carp. This is the only
undeveloped land adjacent to the Carp Fairgrounds. The owners of
the land graciously agreed to give the City of Ottawa and the
community of Carp a 3-year moratorium on the sale and
development of the property; the 3-year grace period will expire
July 14, 2007.
We have less than five months to get this
finished and reach our goal of raising $500,000 (approximately)
towards the purchase price.
The rest of the funds will come from other sources, as long as
we can show that the community is serious about preserving this
important piece of land and putting it to a good use for
everyone.
